When you and your child are getting ready for the next sports season, remember to schedule their sports physical exam at any KidMed location.
It’s quick and easy to save a spot online, or you can visit as a walk-in for a sports physical. Our best time of day to serve you is right after school, between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
If your child has chronic issues (such as cardiac issues or uncontrolled asthma), please visit your primary pediatrician for their sports physical.
What are sports physicals and why are they necessary?
An evaluation of a child’s capability to participate. A medical professional can determine if a child is physically capable of engaging in sports or other physical activities.
It may be required. A pre-participation sports physical is often required by schools and youth athletic leagues.
To identify potential risks or limits. The sports physical exam may identify any significant family medical history, individual medical condition, or physical limitations that may put a child or teen at risk of injury or limit their ability to participate safely.
What you and your child can expect
- A conversation about your child’s health history, including:
- Pertinent family medical history such as any illness in an immediate family member at a young age
- Current medical issues
- Past medical history
- Past surgical history
- Current medications
- Previous injuries
- Facial / nose / mouth / ear injuries
- Medication allergies
- Conducting the physical exam, including:
- Height and weight
- Vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate
- Vision testing (bring glasses or contacts if they wear them)
- Examination of eyes, ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, and abdomen
- Examination of the musculoskeletal system including range of motion testing, general strength testing in all extremities
- Examination of neck and back
- Examination of the neurologic system
How to plan for your sports physical visit
- Bring the sports physical form provided either by the school or the team. We can provide a standard form if you don’t have one.
- Complete the parent and student sections of the form prior to arrival.
- Make sure the health history questionnaire is complete and accurate.
- If your child wears glasses or contacts, they must have them for their sports physical exam.
How much does it cost?
Sports physical exams at KidMed are offered for a flat fee of $50.
Note: KidMed will not charge your insurance for a sports physical.
Most health insurance plans allow coverage for one primary care general exam yearly, meaning that an additional sports physical is usually not covered.
